🎥 Why Use Overlay Textures?

Current digital tools like video cameras, photography, or computer-generated imagery tools are incredibly precise and good at producing high-quality images. However, digital cleanliness and clarity in images can often be boring. Reality is much more interesting when there are textures, dirt, and layers that distort the image.

In many cases, a significant part of an artist's work involves simulating imperfections and dirtying the image to achieve an original and different character. Using overlay textures on the images you generate can radically transform the tone and perception of the content and the stories told through the images.

🔮 How it works

Import the videos directly into your usual video editing or post-production tool (e.g., DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut, etc.). You can adjust the contrast of the videos to perfectly match what you're looking for. Use different blending modes to combine these textures with your videos (e.g., Screen, Add, Overlay, etc.).

An Example of How I Use These Textures:

Film Grain: I usually use the "Overlay" blending mode and adjust the contrast to make the effect more intense.

Film Grunge Textures: For these, I can vary the blending mode, but I typically use "Overlay" or "Screen."

Additionally, I often duplicate the grunge textures, reverse the playback order, and invert the color. This way, I can use the texture for blending modes where only the blacks remain visible, such as "Multiply."

Pro tip: If you softly blur the original image, the blending of textures with it will often look smoother and more natural. By adjusting the amount of blur or creating areas with varying focus, you can also achieve some really cool effects!

Here you can see the difference between using the original image with a slight blur and without any blur.
